Who was William Slater?

Summary

William Slater was born in England and moved to America as a young adult to work with Thomas Jackson. He frequently wrote letters home containing information about ropemaking and his daily life.

When he returned to England, Thomas Jackson addressed many of his later letters first to William. He married Elizabeth Coates and had a son named Charles Lincoln Slater in the 1870s.


William Slater arrived in America in 1857 and began working in Thomas Jackson’s rope making business. He frequently sent letters home to his parents and brother, John, and sisters, Elizabeth, Sarah, and Mary. He often traveled between Pennsylvania and New Jersey and kept up with his English relatives who moved to America. He married Elizabeth Coates and had a son named Charles Lincoln Slater in the 1870s.
